Vijay Iyer’s UNEASY

Vijay Iyer presents a powerful new trio, in which he is joined by two key figures in creative music, Tyshawn Sorey and Linda May Han Oh.  “We have an energy together that is very distinct. It has a different kind of propulsion, a different impulse and a different spectrum of colors”. The repertoire on UnEasy, recorded at Oktaven Audio Studio in Mount Vernon, New York in December 2019, includes Iyer originals written over a span of 20 years, plus Gerri Allen’s “Drummer’s Song” and a radical recasting of Cole Porter’s “Night and Day.”

“Vijay Iyer and a new trio reflect on the ‘Uneasy’ past and present…Iyer composed “Combat Breathing” in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement nearly seven years ago; its inclusion on Uneasy is an implicit reminder of how urgent that cause remains.” NPR

“Vijay Iyer could be the poster boy for twenty-first-century jazz: omnivorous in his musical interests, socially and politically aware, his powers as a pianist, composer, and bandleader ever-expanding. “Uneasy,” his first trio recording with the drummer Tyshawn Sorey (a longtime collaborator) and the bassist Linda May Han Oh, is a triumph of small-group interchange and fertile invention.” THE NEW YORKER

“[Uneasy] retains Iyer’s attraction to dark colors, elliptical shapes, and plunging momentum—but there’s a more pronounced expression of equal say among the musicians, along with a powerful sense of shared purpose and a stratospheric level of attunement.” PITCHFORK
